What are good learner bikes?
Ive always thought motorcycles were pretty cool. But ive never got the chance to ride one. (Not even dirt bikes or minibikes or anything) Now that Ive grown up, i wanna get one. What would be a good bike for me to learn on?
I would like it to be a Harley or something american, but if enough people tell me a honda or a kawasaki is best for new riders i might look into it.
Also, are there any procedures/mods to make it safer for learning? (Hopefully not anything lame like training wheels.) Im almost done with highschool, and my school has an FAA certified aircraft mechanic school, so i know my way around a wrench and a maintenance manual.
Im not that young, im 19. i know saying im almost done with highschool makes me sound younger than i actually am, but they aircraft program takes 5 years to graduate, and im months away.
First take the motorcycle safety course and get your endorsement. Go to any brand motorcycle web sight and look in the the “STANDARD” category. The standard category has the light weight type bikes, good for starting out and still stylish. Almost all makes have them. They average from around 250cc – 450cc and some are automatics. Is it necessary to turn fuel off on an old motorcycle (without vacuum petcock)?
I have a 1975 Honda CB550K (does NOT have vacuum petcock actuator like many modern bikes), and I’ve heard that if you leave the fuel petcock on while the engine is sitting it will drain fuel into the oil.
To me, it seems like in order for this to happen, the float would have to be stuck and the overflow tube in the carb would have to be blocked, and only then would fuel drain into the cylinders.
Is this true?
Manual petcock- shutoff is good idea. The fuel into oil situation has happened enough to be noted in shop manuals. A slightly weak float and crimped overflow hose can let fuel slowly trickle into manifold. if intake valve is even slightly open fuel can get into cylinder and by ring gap. You have 4 carbs and cylinders to worry about. I’ve seen a couple bikes taken out of storage at shops that had gas in oil, carbs need cleaning- most time one or 2 carbs leaked while other one to 3 carb floats still holding. worst was the ethanol mixes that ate into plastic floats and all carbs needed new floats. This was after over winter storage. If you get gas in oil overnight you need to check floats and needle/seats. .

Log onto their site, get the price quote, take it to your dealer. If he can’t or won’t come close you can fly to Los Angeles, get the bike, ride around for a couple of weeks enjoying Disneyland, Knotts, Seaworld, etc. to break the bike in and then ride home.

The Yamaha has a much more aggressive look in my opinion plus I like how the gold forks look against the blue fairings. I personally own a 2006 Yamaha R6 and it is a great bike after 16k miles. I have it in blue and black as blue is my favorite color but that is my opinion. Good luck and have fun!

Actual gas mileage on a motorcycle???
What is the actual gas mileage for a new Honda Rebel or a Nighthawk (250cc), how many miles per gallon do they get???????????
All interstate, average speed 65 to 70 mph.
I have a friend with a Rebel. She is quite petite. She is getting about 70mpg.
The Rebel can certainly be used on all roads, but it is not very comfortable at full highway speeds. And your size will be a factor in this. Unless you have a physical size requirement like my friend, then most other bikes will be better suited for highway use.
